Meet The Saxons
The Saxons operates as one of the sporting sections of the Saxmundham Sports & Recreational Club, a registered charity that owns the Carlton Park sports ground at Saxmundham, Suffolk. We currently have over 75 members.
The club has had success at local level and abroad, up to World Championship levels. The club has good facilities with a 23 acre field, changing rooms and an indoor hall for circuit training. We are open to people of all ages from 16 upwards and for all abilities from beginners to experienced athletes. The aim of our club is to teach the principles of running and training with the emphasis on having fun while getting fit. We have a number of coaches offering help and advice.

Our History
In 2005, a group of like-minded individuals came together with the ambition of forming a new running and fitness club in Saxmundham – and The Saxons were born!
After a successful application to register the club with the Eastern Region Athletics Association, the club appointed Gordon Merfield as Chairperson and Club Coach. The inaugural club session was held on the 6th of March 2005 and covered training and running techniques.
In 2025, The Saxons celebrate two decades in operation. Club nights are held twice a week and a beginner’s course runs for 8 weeks starting in May. In October the club hosts an annual Five Mile Race drawing competitors from across Suffolk.
